Modern combat helmets are made of materials such as Kevlar, polyethylene and other ballistic composites. These materials offer a high level of protection while still being relatively lightweight to minimize stress on the wearer.

The protection classes for combat helmets vary depending on the area of ​​use and type of threat. Here are the common protection classes and their features:

- NIJ Level I: Provides basic protection against light impacts and shocks, but no ballistic protection. This class is ideal for helmets used primarily in emergency services or light protection requirements.
- NIJ Level II: Offers protection against medium caliber handguns (eg 9mm, .357 Magnum). This class protects against projectiles and fragments and is well suited for law enforcement officers who require increased protection and quick access.
- NIJ Level IIIA: Protects against higher caliber handguns, including .44 Magnum and .357 SIG, and offers additional protection against fragments. Helmets in this class are often made of Kevlar or similar materials and offer a high level of protection for military and police use.
- Impact protection: Some helmets, such as tactical and special rescue helmets, are certified to impact protection standards (eg EN standards) and offer protection against falls and impacts, but not ballistic protection. Ideal for rescue operations or climbing work.
- Advanced protection levels (Levels III and IV): These provide protection against rifle bullets and are found in specific helmets for extremely dangerous missions. Due to their weight and thickness, they are intended for military use and special threats.

Combat helmets are available in different cuts and designs that vary in protection level and modularity:

- Full Cut: Covers the entire head including the ears and offers the highest level of protection. Ideal for use with high protection requirements, but less suitable for accessories such as hearing protection systems.
- Mid Cut: Offers less coverage on the sides, leaving the ears more exposed. A good balance between protection and flexibility for communication and hearing protection systems.
- High Cut: Cuts higher above the ears, leaving the sides free. This helmet is lightweight and allows easy integration of accessories, ideal for special forces and dynamic operations.
- Low Cut (PASGT): A classic helmet type that completely covers the ears and offers additional protection. Often used in the military, but less modular for accessories.
- Bump Helmet: Designed for impact and fall protection, but without ballistic protection. These lightweight helmets, often in a high-cut design, are ideal for airsoft, paintball and rescue operations.
