The most important types of jackets are fleece jackets, windbreakers, softshell jackets and wind, cold and wet weather jackets. Each type of jacket is specially designed for certain weather conditions and activities and, depending on the material and construction, offers protection from wind, cold and wet weather.

Water-repellent jackets keep out light rain and splashes, but prolonged contact with water can allow moisture to penetrate. Waterproof jackets, on the other hand, have a special membrane or seal and offer complete protection from rain and snow, even in heavy rainfall.

DWR stands for "Durable Water Repellent" and is a special coating on the surface of the jacket that prevents water from penetrating and ensures that water beads up. DWR coatings offer additional protection in light rain showers, but are not completely waterproof.
